I was middle aged and homeless, soon to be penniless, and really and truly no different from that bag lady sitting on the bench over there. I couldn’t jack it in and go home, because I didn’t have a home to go to anymore. The bicycle and the tent were now home. Wherever I found myself on any given night was now home. And that meant, for tonight, Genoa Piazza Principe Railway Station was home.
I was cycling across Europe in search of Utopia, a place I believed was located somewhere in Greece. When I found it, I would start a new life there. It was my big, fat, Greek midlife crisis. But now I was having a crisis within a crisis. What on earth had I been thinking?

I really loved this book that I came across on Goodreads. I can't remember a time when I actually laughed out loud while reading a book, but some parts of the author's travel experiences were so funny that I couldn't control myself. This is certainly not a novel, but rather a travelogue about a middle-aged woman traveling across Europe on a bicycle with a tent and an old computer. The book didn't make me to want to go out and buy a bicycle, but it did cause me to realize I was reading a book by a very talented and gifted writer. When I first started reading, I wasn't at all sure I would like this book, but by the time I finished the first chapter, I was hooked and kept on reading until I got to the last page----and then I felt bad that the book had ended. You really feel like you're riding along as you travel through the pages of the book. It's different from anything I have ever read before. I think it would be very difficult not to really enjoy "The Wrong Shade of Yellow."Product details

The Wrong Shade of Yellow eBook Margaret Eleanor Leigh Reviews
The story of a middle aged woman, riding a bicycle across Europe. Does not sound like a particularily interesting book, does it? But Margaret did it, and she made me laugh while doing it. She says she'll never do anything like it again, but if she does, I want to hear about it. Margaret opened my eyes regarding my opinions of some of the European countries she traveled through. I have never wanted to visit Belgium, and now I'm positive that I will never go there. Thank you, Margaret, for that. And what an undertaking, moving your mother to Europe to live with you! I chuckled and chuckled at that! And I'm sure your mother endeared herself to you after that experience. So funny! This book is thoroughly enjoyable, and I suggest it to anyone who enjoys reading memoirs. Especially if you have travelled to the countries that Margaret went to. You can compare notes!
I loved this book. Margaret Eleanor Leigh sure knows how to write...loved her descriptions of people, places, her own escapades and the countries and villages she bicycled through. Who would have thought a bicycle journey for a middle-aged woman could be so fun, scary, imaginative and gutsy? I kept waiting to learn why the book was titled The Wrong Shade of Yellow and when I came across its meaning, I shook my head and couldn't stop grinning...because it was sad and final. I love being educated when I read a book and this one really taught me more than I could put in a review. Her words pulled me into her sorrows, her delights, her fears and frustrations as well as the bliss of beautiful panoramic views and mostly nice people she made friends with (or not) along the way to Greece. I highly recommend this book and plan to read all of her books eventually because I love the way her words slip across the pages! (I won this book during a recent We Love Memoirs Facebook event -- and very I was very happy to be one of the winners. So many great memoirs on that site.)
I listened to this on audio, and had to restart it once because it took a bit of getting used to the accent and the speed that the narrator used . After I got used to it, I thoroughly enjoyed the story .
I've read several "biking " type books of people who bike certain distances and most of them talk a lot about the training they did ahead of time, the equipment they brought , and how many miles per day they racked up . This one wasn't done like that, but it was still an interesting story .
The author ( who calls herself middle aged , but never really gives her age ) , one day just gets so fed up with her hum-drum job , has a bad sick spell, and while in the hospital makes plans to chuck it all and take off on a bike trip from London to Greece .
She describes some of the people and a bit of the country she sees along the way, talks a bit about riding a bike and sleeping in a tent , but doesn't go into detail on any of that either.
I think this was more of a voyage of discovery for herself ,and she was searching for something while on her journey .
All in all a good book .
I finished reading The Wrong Shade of Yellow last night. It had an unusual title and glad the author explained the meaning behind it. It was too bad, we had to wait until the end of the book to understand it. And I didn’t quite understand why she referred to her mother as Polly. Something seemed a miss there. I thoroughly enjoyed turning the cyber pages and reading her entries, and I appreciated her photography; it really enriched the content with a dash of reality. I admired her courage to camp as a solo woman, and she listened to her sixth sense when to move on or when to stay. She seems very intuitive and understood when she had reached Utopia and then pushed past it only to have to make a U-turn to return! I can relate in life myself when I’ve had to make a U-turn! I also enjoyed reading about how the hand of God, or providence – whatever you want to call it, saved her from the two feral dogs that planted themselves in the middle of the road and crouched towards her! Such bravery! I felt sort of sad at the end when her brother (although an angel in disguise) encouraged her to return to Scotland with Polly, for Polly’s sake. I hope the author has found what she was looking for and is happy in her new place. I pray that she may meet someone special too to share her amazing life experiences with! It would be so nice to read about a romance blossoming in her travels! I thoroughly enjoyed it! A book you may like to read is Teacher One Woman's True Adventure about a teacher who works on a remote First Nations Reserve in Canada!
